The question if Medicare will pay for adjustable beds is a commonly asked question.  So I set out to find the answer.

As you may know, Medicare is health insurance for people over the age of 65 and others who qualify for the program.  In addition to Original Medicare, you may be eligible for a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement policy.  Policies you may be eligible for is based upon the state and county you live.  Some counties have several plans and others have fewer.  Some have only Medigap policies available.

I discovered the United Healthcare reimbursement policy called Hospital Beds (NCD 280.7) Reimbursement Policy. This a detailed 5 page policy.  The answer to the question, “Does Medicare pay for adjustable beds” is perhaps.

As you read through this policy, you will find the hospital bed requires a prescription signed and dated by the treating physician.  The prescription must state why the patient or member requires an adjustable bed.

There are many types of hospital bed including variable height beds, semi electric beds and total electric hospital beds. Heavy duty extra wide and extra heavy duty beds capable of holding from 350 to 600 pounds. The cost of an adjustable bed may be as high as $9,000.

If you or doctor feel you may soon need an adjustable hospital bed, Medicare may cover the costs, and it is a good thing to plan.  As with United Healthcare, you can expect all insurance providers to have a similar policy. Be prepared to get help understanding the adjustable bed Medicare guidelines, it may be difficult.
